NineToFive Style

Grayscale With a Pop of Color

When I first purchased this skirt from Express, I saw it online and was excited to see how it fit. The slit gave the skirt a bit more personality than the normal pencil skirt which I thought was a great addition since it is an otherwise conservative, predictable business skirt. To be honest, when I first tried on the skirt I was disappointed. Somehow, the model and the pictures looked better than the actual fit for me personally. The slit I was so excited about was not as form fitting as other pencil skirts from Express which made it feel…crumpy (yes, a word I made up). I was even more underwhelmed when I paired it with the black blouse. It just felt boring and uneventful. Another day at the office. Sometimes, boring and uneventful is okay. However, I could not settle for an “another day at the office” look with this skirt I was so excited about and paid so much money for! After staring in the mirror for a long ten minutes trying to figure out what was so “off” about this outfit, I realized what this needed was color. Everything blended together with the different shades of black and gray. To solve this issue I changed my previous silver and black necklace with a green and silver necklace and earring set I had previously neglected and voilà! An actual outfit was born! The first time I wore this to work I got SO many compliments on my necklace and outfit as a whole. So many women at my job were inspired to add more color to their daily looks. I learned a valuable lesson that day: any old boring outfit can be given new life with vibrant, colorful accessories. Give it a try!

* *I purchased the blouse New York and Co. back when I was an intern (2013) and the skirt from Express. Unfortunately, neither of these items are for sale. Use this post for inspiration!
