The start of 2021 marked almost two years since I’d stepped away from Dresses and Blazers due to difficult life circumstances. My time away was filled with much introspection, self-work and growth. I knew in my return, my “welcome back” to the cyber world, that I wanted to display the strength, determination, and perseverance I gained and fought for during my difficult growth years. I wanted to make a bold statement, declaring exactly who I am to the world – and not just who I am, but who I fought to be. I have also been tremendously inspired (like most women and people of color) by the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the first woman and woman of color Vice President of the United States. I wanted to capture the current empowerment energy that most women from my demographic feel due to this momentous event. With the inauguration coinciding with the relaunch of Dresses and Blazers, this bold powerful, pink suit was the perfect fit to convey my message.
This suit is from Express, and immediately caught my eye upon viewing it online. The satin pink is feminine, classy, and bold. It is a natural attention grabber because of the color but is not outlandish in a way that will bring unnecessary negative attention in any setting.
I decided to pair this suit with a soft, cream colored blouse to compliment, not distract or bring attention away from the main event, which is the pink suit. The softness of the blouse enhances the suit quality with it’s elegant ruffles.
As a continuation of the bold pink, I chose complimentary sparkling pink pumps to complete the statement. These pumps are bold, assertive, and demanding of attention. It forces onlookers to take in the full look, from head to toe.
Lastly, I found this green croc work bag at TJ Maxx. This was pure luck and I thank the fashion gods for it! Upon seeing this bag I immediately envisioned the pink and green pairings and knew it would be a perfect accessory to this power look. This too also contributes to the Kamala Harris energy – my Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror and VP.
