This summer was one of the busiest seasons of my life. Balancing work, business affairs, a social life and family responsibilities left me little time to organize and stay on top of the affairs in my life. The result was debilitating anxiety and exhaustion. I created a Daily Dashboard to better help me understand what’s happening in my life at all times. Taking 10 minutes of everyday to populate my dashboard has been a personal game-changer. Here’s why having elite organization is one of the best ways to unlock your personal genius.
- Clarity of mind and thought. When we don’t know or fully understand what’s happening in our lives, our brain exists in a constant state of mental fog. Many of our problems exist due to being unclear about the details that make up our lives. Being organized and aware of key “indicators” in our life (i.e. finances, personal goals) allows our brains to make the necessary connections needed to meet goals and solve any problem that comes our way. When we remove the “fog” of unknown and face the details (good or bad) we’re able to solve our problems and reach solutions more quickly.
- Removing anxiety of the unknown. One of the greatest benefits I’ve noticed of being organized is the reduction in anxiety experienced from being unaware of the important details that make up my life. When I don’t know how I’ve spent my money, who I need to respond to, or what I need to do this day/week/month, anxiety is inevitable. Operating with a high degree of reality-checking allows us to truly be present and live in a non-distracted state. “We make ourselves worthy of living by making ourselves competent to live. If we default on the responsibility of thought and reason, if we turn our backs on reality and facts, thus undercutting our competence to live, we will not retain a sense of worthiness.” – Nathaniel Braden
- Peace & Pleasure. When we take the time to figure-out and face the facts (pretty and ugly) that make up our lives, the result is a more peaceful, pleasurable life experience. The below quote on delayed gratification applies well here: “Delaying gratification is the process of scheduling the pain and pleasure in life in such a way as to make the pleasure better by facing the pain first and getting it over with. By putting forward a little effort now, we are avoiding a lot of pain later on.” – R.T. Kendall I couldn’t agree more.
