One of the most important aspects of being a professional in today’s corporate world is having a quality LinkedIn presence. Whether you’re happily and gainfully employed, or currently on the job hunt, your LinkedIn profile is something that should not be of neglect. Utilizing LinkedIn is a powerful tool for professional growth and advancement. LinkedIn is a place to connect with other professionals in your current or target industry and to stay abreast of new opportunities. In my short time in Corporate America, my LinkedIn profile has lead to several interviews and three job offers (which I ended up accepting). Because LinkedIn is such an important part of the working world, I’ve provided some important keys to optimizing your profile for success. Check it out below!
Key’s to Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile:
- Have a quality headshot. Your headshot is the first point of contact a recruiter and hiring manager has to your profile. Initial judgements are made here. Is this person professional? Are they serious about their career? Headshots that are selfies or Facebook profile photos are not acceptable. Your headshot should be professional – with you looking directly into the camera, smiling.
- Include a bio. Your bio is what replaces the Cover Letter and “Summary” or “Objective” section of a resume. This is your opportunity to summarize your skillsets and brag on your accomplishments. This also is a place where you can speak on your desired industry and role of choice or what type of position you are seeking.
- Elaborate extensively on each work experience. This is not a resume. Whereas your resume needs to be concise, your LinkedIn profile does not. You can include six, seven, or even ten bullet points under one job experience to demonstrate all competences and accomplishments. Go overboard!
- Elaborate on educational experiences. Don’t just list the school you graduated from, include it all! List your major, graduation accolades, clubs, and organizations you were a part of. This is all a part of your brand.
- Include volunteerism and other extracurricular interests. Show the full extent of yourself – not just professionally but personally as well.
Implement these keys and become more successful on LinkedIn today! Feel free to check out my profile here.
