Welcome to Skirts and Blouses! Skirts and Blouses is a section of Dresses and Blazers specifically devoted to undergraduate women. Before I was a full-blown corporate money making machine, I was a young, insecure, college student with no road map or mentors guiding me along the way. Thankfully my path turned out to be successful but there were many pitfalls and obstacles along the way that were preventable. I didn’t have an older sister, cousin, or mentor in my ear telling me “do this in your sophomore year. If you make this mistake, this is how you recover.” I made my mistakes publicly and privately and had to figure out how to recover through intuition, instinct, and prayer. Although I don’t regret my journey, I can look back at different points and see how I could’ve been better positioned. I believe my life played out as it was supposed to. I’m thankful for my unique path. It’s this path that has equipped me with the material I will share with you so that you can one day achieve the success I have and hopefully, even more. The sky is not the limit!
Why is it called “Skirts and Blouses”?
Because this section of the blog is devoted to the younger, pre-professionals. A premature version of its full-blown counterpart , Dresses and Blazers. Skirts are baby, half formed dresses, which is the equivalent of what you are professionally as an undergraduate. Additionally, Dresses and Blazers represents the most powerful stature of a woman at the top of her game professionally (I talk about that more here). As an undergrad your focus is surviving and thriving in your studies, on-campus involvement, and internship opportunities. Your focus is not to climb a corporate ladder but instead to find one.
What do you plan to address?
- Your studies. Since this portion of the blog is for undergraduate women, it’s only right that I spend time addressing the area that’s one of your biggest concerns. How you perform as an undergraduate – your GPA, your involvement on campus, your extracurricular activities all play a vital role in the life you will live after graduation.
- Your opportunities. As a college student you have a world of opportunity at your feet. From scholarships, to internship programs, to fellowship opportunities, the possibilities are endless. I intend to help you navigate this space as best as possible so you can leave college have taken advantage of all this world has to offer. There’s nothing worse than finding out about an opportunity after the window has closed that you can no longer take advantage of.
- Your mindset. Too many times I’ve talked and mentored undergraduate women only to find out that their focus was completely The things they thought mattered, didn’t matter at all. The things I knew to actually matter, they had no clue about. In this Undergraduate Series I will frequently focus on your mindset – the one you currently have and the one you should have to position yourself for post graduate, real-world success.
- Your journey. Everyone is on their own journey. No two paths are the same. However, we all can learn and take notes from other’s experiences. While your journey is unique and specific to you, we all have similar points of arrival and decision making. I intend to equip you with the tools you need to overcome and make the best decisions at each turning point.
